Will (only his second ride) on Velvet Cloud |
Never have I been so pleased to report back on two pull ups in a race..... I can't tell you how delighted we are that both jockeys and horses finished in one piece. There were fifteen runners in the race and we were all standing by the second fence - Pete was about mid division and Murphy stood off the fence and jumped it as though it was six feet high. he then landed really steeply and stumbled slightly - Pete was hanging around his neck with two legs on one side, the crowd around the fence were gasping waiting for him to hit the ground but somehow he managed to climb back on board. His saddle had slipped right round and he had no stirrups and we were expecting him to pull up but he kept going, effectively bareback for
fourteen fences before he reluctantly pulled up, even though he thought he still stood a chance of being placed he thought that it wasn't fair on the horse. He was so lucky and it was pretty impressive how Murphy still kept with the pace with Pete bareback and not able to help him over a fence. Fantastic horsemanship
Will rode a really sensible race on Cloud, taking her wide to find the better ground and then pulling her up at exactly the right moment three fences from home when he know she wasn't handling the sticky ground. He came back beaming from ear to ear and absolutely over the moon with the way she jumped and travelled. I have to say I was so relieved as I was somewhat concerned that she was too small to jump the big fences around the back and was very worried he was going to be decked. All his family were there to watch including his Nan so massive pressure and thank goodness little Cloud didn't let us down and we all celebrated afterwards for the safe return of them all A really great day.
