Dream ran an average sort of race (5th out of 9) she was spot on in season and was less than enthusiastic, but got round and the tongue tie seemed to make a difference although Will thought her wind still affected her. I used to race ride her mother, Supreme Dream, who was exactly the same when she first started to race, I bought her as a three year old, broke her in and then ran her as a five year old. At that stage I thought it would be better to put a 'proper' jockey on her back, as with me riding her it would be like the blind leading the blind - She hated it, to the point where she would run out at her fences. I then couldn't get anyone to ride her and ended up riding her myself as all the 'proper' jockeys declined. We used to hunt around at the back, I would never pull her up even though she would try and kid me that she was tired. Gradually once she knew where the finishing line was she suddenly took an interest in getting to the end of the race (and to the hay net in the lorry)! as quickly as possible and won a number of races for me. It took her a couple of seasons for the penny to drop though and I'm sure that Dream is just the same. She need a numpty rider like I was to kid her along into thinking that she is just hunting and then the rest will come. Maybe... We had an early start this morning as we took Leon and Doris to Towcester for a racecourse gallop. They were both really impressive, particularly Doris who was on the bridle all the way to the line after two and a half miles. Leon was funny in that when he got overtaken (we went around with three other horses) he half gave up, but then I clicked him on ( I purposely didn't carry a whip) and he suddenly realised that he could catch them up and he wasn't going to be smacked for his efforts, he then re-joined the others and beat them on the line - he then shot off back down the hill and I had a real problem trying to pull him up, with Doris who was also really keen to continue. I definitely think he will stay 2.5-3 miles which means that if he fails under rules he can always go pointing next season. He really loved it and hopefully that is what he needs to make him want to do the job again. We will run Doris in a bumper in the next couple of weeks as we think she is ready to go now. The weather is still lovely. I had my first swim of the year in the river last evening - very cold but just beautiful. Rain is expected tomorrow, fingers crossed as it wont be safe to race if this dry weather continues.
