Not exactly the best weather for the horses to be enjoying their summer break but all seem to be relaxing and letting themselves down nicely.
Yesterday we took Dove (with foal) and Dream to Yorton stud near Welshpool, to have a  'meaningful relationship' with Norse Dancer for Dove and Universal for Dream. It will be Dream's first foal if all goes well. Up until now she has been a lead horse for the youngsters over fences and my hunter and has been an absolute legend. She is the one and only progeny from my lovely little race mare Supreme Dream who sadly broke her leg when she was carrying her second foal. Because Supreme Dream was so tiny we thought we were doing the right thing by mating her with a big stallion, Alflora, especially as first foals are normally smaller. WRONG. She produced this foal who didn't stop growing and is HUGE, clumsy and accident prone, hence not making it as a racehorse. Supreme Dream took an instant dislike to her and resolutely refused to let her anywhere near her, nearly killing her in the process. She had to be bottle fed and used to bunt feed troughs and walls to find a teat and managed to dislodge her retina so she has only one eye..... She sounds a great broodmare doesn't she?!  Oh well, I love her and can't wait to see her with a foal at foot and just hope she is a better mother than her own was....
It is a foul day today so we thought we would take the day off and go to the Ascot sales. I will try and keep my hands in my pockets.
