It was wonderful to see Palypso De Creek win the hunter chase at Leicester yesterday. His owner and trainer, Jill Dawson had very sadly passed away a few days earlier. Clare Hart gave him a fantastic ride, inspired no doubt by the angel on her shoulder. It was very emotional for all concerned. I remember Jill being so kind to me when I first started race riding. She was a top jockey and an absolute legend and yet she still gave me the time of day and was as gracious in defeat as she was in victory. I have a lovely memory of her last year at Weatherby racecourse when Palypso and Dr K had battled it out up to the line with Palypso winning by a length and a half. After the race we all sat in her lorry in an empty car park, as the 'proper trainers' had rushed home, she was understanably delighted but also very humble, and we reflected on what a wonderful sport pointing was in that we are happy to share each others victories and commiserate on defeats and we still had time for each other. A very special memory for an exceptional lady, she will be sadly missed.
